b. 3-4

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

..

In bar 3 all sources feature a completely unjustified  (cautionary?) to the first G note. In FC a respective  was also added in bar 4 (in pencil). We do not consider this accidental to be part of FC, since it was added by the reviser of GE. In addition to GE, the latter was also added in EE. In the main text we omit both accidentals.

The sharp in bar 3 must have been entered into [A] by Chopin. According to us, it could be an echo of the initial notation of bars 1-2, in which the top R.H. minim was written down as g1.

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

..

In the main text we add cautionary accidentals – naturals to a1 in bars 7 and 15 and to b1 in bar 13. In FC they were already added by the reviser of GE, who also added a  to a2 in bar 9.

4 wedges in FC

4 staccato dots in FE (→EE) & GE2

3 dots in GE1

..

The F crotchets at the beginning of bars 21, 23, 25 and 27 are provided with wedges in FC and with dots in FE (→EE). As the second time (bars 117-123) both sources are provided with dots, to the main text we adopt this kind of markings. In GE the wedges of FC were reproduced as dots; moreover, in GE1 the mark in bar 21 was overlooked, supplemented in GE2.

b. 23-25

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

..

In FC one can see cautionary naturals to a1 in bars 23, 25 and 27, added in pencil. They come from the reviser of GE, and this is the only edition in which they are present. We include them in the main text.

Notation in FC

FE (→EE)

..

Crotchets at the beginning of the bar probably resulted from a correction in print, most probably from the FC version. The latter is, however, misleading – one can get the impression that the bar includes 5 crotchets. The two-part writing specifying the rhythm was introduced in GE. The simplified rhythmic notation is accompanied in FE with the pedalling (see the note below), which, consequently, produces a very similar sound effect to the FC version. It proves that Chopin either changed the rhythm notation himself or accepted it through the addition of pedalling. Due to the above, we provide this version in the main text, simpler in terms of notation and more pianistically natural.
